Play it Safe this Summer, Put
Safety First
Canadians live for the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer,
what with all the cold and slush we have to endure throughout the winter months.
Sometimes in our haste to get out there and enjoy the
summer weather, we forget to put safety first and the consequences can be
deadly. The fact of the matter is hundreds of Canadians die, or become seriously
injured, every summer in accidents involving drinking and driving, drinking and
boating, swimming, even from fireworks backfiring. No one wants to think that
the best time of year can be a dangerous time of year, however, with a little
extra caution, families can sail through the summer without a scratch.
The Government of Canada has created a wonderful website
full of useful information on staying safe at home, work, the cottage, the lake,
even on the Internet. It's available at
www.SafeCanada.ca.
The site is so easy to use – the left-hand navigation bar
lets parents, kids, teachers, youth and even Aboriginal Canadians choose from a
wide variety of topics – everything from bicycle safety tips and propane safety
to West Nile virus and traveling in bear country. For anyone who thought it was
okay to drink and drive a boat, there is even a fact sheet on impaired boating
from www.boatsmart.ca. Parents can also wade through the confusion over Personal
Flotation Devices (PFD) and how to fit their child with one properly. And if you
thought fireworks were as simple and safe as lighting a match, think again. The
website has an entire page on Family Fireworks Safety.
So before you plan your summer vacation, plan to spend a
few minutes surfing www.SafeCanada.ca.
Encourage your children to surf the site as well. After all, many Canadian
children are left alone for hours at a time so the more they know, the safer
they will be.
Canadians can also call the Government of Canada
toll-free hotline for information on a specific topic. The phone number is
1-800-O-CANADA (1-800-622-6232).
