Safe Kids Canada and Sponsor Johnson &
Johnson Join Forces to Promote Public Awareness of Safe Kids Week - June 2 to 8,
2003
Safe Kids Canada is the national injury
prevention program of The Hospital for Sick Children. Each year, Safe Kids
Canada and sponsor Johnson & Johnson join forces to run a major national
public awareness and education campaign called Safe Kids Week. This year's
campaign will take place June 2 - 8, 2003.
During Safe Kids Week, hundreds of community
organizations from across Canada join with Safe Kids Canada to focus public
attention on preventing injuries to children. The campaign raises
awareness about a specific type of injury and educates the public about
prevention.
Canadian homes are full of products designed to
help parents and caregivers raise kids, from cribs to car seats. Parents
quite naturally assume these products to be safe. But some aren't, either
because the product is dangerous or because parents do not use the product
correctly. For example, baby walkers with wheels lead to hundreds of
injuries in Canada every year, many of them serious falls down
stairs.
Older cribs, baby gates and playpens that don't
meet current standards have design problems that can lead to injuries in young
children, and even death.
This year's campaign is called "From Cribs
to Car Seats, are your Kids Safe? Check it out!".
Safe Kids Week will educate parents about product
dangers, encourage them to throw out unsafe products and provide information on
using products correctly. Many children's products are borrowed from
friends and family or purchased at second-hand stores or garage sales, so the
campaign will also include information on second hand products.
