SUE Arrives at Museum of Idaho Giant
T-Rex will be on Display from February 18 to May 26, 2003
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho - The new Museum of Idaho received its first major
exhibit when it received A T. rex Named SUE from Seattle last week. SUE is
on loan from the Field Museum in Chicago, and will be exhibited at the Museum of
Idaho during its grand opening from February 18 through May 26, 2003.
Measuring 42 feet long and over 90% complete, SUE is the largest and most
complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever discovered. "It is the
exceptional completeness of the SUE specimen, that sets it apart," said
Nick Gailey, program director for the museum. As the most complete
Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever recovered, SUE has tremendous value for
scientists and the general public.
"SUE arrived in grand fashion with a police escort and sirens
blasting," said Gailey. "The public responded by stepping out
onto the sidewalks and cheering as three huge orange trucks carried her through
historic downtown Idaho Falls." There was no lack of help in
unloading the trucks. A team of eighteen volunteers from BYU-Idaho and
Argonne National Laboratory unloaded SUE. Meanwhile, local news teams from
all three major networks were there to film the proceedings.
The traveling exhibit features a fully mounted cast of SUE along with many other
dinosaur exhibits. SUE will be the museum's largest exhibit and will fill
about a quarter of the museum's new glass-enclosed annex. "It should
be a terrific attraction and educational opportunity for children from the
Intermountain region," Gailey added. In addition to SUE, a number of
other dinosaur exhibits are being loaned to the Museum of Idaho by several Utah
based institutions, including the Museum of Ancient Life, BYU, DinoLabs, and
Western Paleontological Laboratories.
