When
we look up on a clear fall night, thousands of stars beckon. Each of these
stars is a sun, similar in many ways to our own sun, but much farther away. To
many, the stars form patterns and pictures of heroes, monsters, and mythical
beasts – the constellations. But these patterns are fictitious, imposed on
the night sky by people searching for meaning in the unexplained. Explore our
galaxy from the inside out. Begin with an earth-bound view, and then leave
home and travel the spiral arms, stopping to visit regions of starbirth and
the shattered corpses of dying stars. Travel to the chaotic centre of the
galaxy, where a supermassive black hole feeds on thousands of stars. Sit back,
enjoy, ask questions and then venture outdoors to explore the galaxy
throughout the coming nights.
