PRINCE EDWARD
ISLAND- THE ISLAND
FOR KIDS
Traditionally, Prince Edward Island has been
Canada's favourite family vacation haven. A kid-size province with
a no-fuss atmosphere makes families feel comfortable and welcome.
Some of our family visitors (with prompting from the pint-size
members) helped come up with this list of favourite ways to pass
the time while on the Island.
Low-cost, no-cost and in tune with nature:
Some of the best family activities are spread out at your feet,
like hiking the trails, fishing, digging clams, picking fresh
strawberries and of course heading to the beach. A visit to a
lobster pound or a climb to the top of a lighthouse can turn into
a memorable adventure for a child.
Organized activities: Any kid (and most
grownups) love to get out on the water. This is easy on Prince
Edward Island, where you can choose from a harbour tour, a
seal-watching tour, deep-sea fishing or canoeing. A visit to the
racetrack is usually a hit, where the sound of the hooves and the
excitement of the finish are fun for everybody. Some of the golf
courses encourage child-size visitors (some don't, so check
first), but nine holes, a driving range or mini golf are easily
accessible around the Island.
Festivals and theatre: It seems every
weekend there is something happening somewhere around the Island.
The community festivals usually revolve around lobster, oysters,
potatoes, draft horses etc. This is a chance to find out what
Islanders are most proud of, and learn a bit about local culture.
A visit to an old-time ceilidh, a Rustico Shindig or the
children's theatre at the Charlottetown Festival add to the list
of choices.
All Things Anne: For fans, and even those
not so keen, we recommend a visit to Green Gables House, the
musical at the Charlottetown Festival, or the Anne of Green Gables
Museum at Silver Bush. Or why not a drive past (or an overnight
at) Dalvay-by-the-Sea, better known as the White Sands Hotel in
the popular Road to Avonlea series?
The Learning Vacation: Some families are
taking advantage of the first-class hockey camps, music camps,
computer camps or gymnastics camps that take place here in the
summer.
Amusement Parks abound: Especially in the
North Shore area, kids
could spend a day (or several) checking out
places like Rainbow Valley,
Sandspit, The Great Island Adventure
Park, or Mill River Fun Park. Water slides, paddle boats, even the
space shuttle are big attractions for many kids.
